Iker Ormazabal - Kronos/Kairos

This track originates from live improvisations, but was structured to an album format. It’s inspired by the acousmatic paradigm of the sound object and the idea of an imaginary landscape. The title “Kronos-Kairos” is inspired by Bruce Spruance’s article in Arcana V (Tzadik 2010) and reflects the measurable and non-measurable qualities of time.

The title, “Kronos/Kairos” is an allusion to two different aspects of time: horizontal time, as in historic or countable time; and vertical time, as in eternal or non-measurable time, or as in a critical or opportune moment. The intersection of both can sometimes be reflected in music in at least two different forms.

On the one hand, when melody/harmony and rhythm resonate with space creating an overtone structure at the time of reproduction; a process that Spruance (2010) describes as ‘Sympatheia” (same passion), deriving from the consideration of silence as the eternal element and sound as the chronological element.

On the other hand, Indian Ragas and minimalist composers, such as Steve Reich or Eliane Radigue, explore the intrinsic connections in composition/improvisation of these two aspects of time. This is reflected in works such as Pandit Pran Nath’s ‘Ragas of Morning and Night’, ‘Midnight Ragas’ or Eliane Radigue’s transcendental meditation inspired ‘Trilogie de la Mort’.
